When I started at Burgess in 1998 I didn’t really know what to expect. I did not have a construction background, but it didn’t take long to start picking it up. In a very short time, Burgess was offering me opportunities to advance my learning. I became ACI certified (American concrete institute) and proficient in reading blueprints. It was important for me to learn a skilled trade, whether it was working on a wall crew, flat work, or site crew I was given the tools to become knowledgeable in each area. Its hard work, but it is also very rewarding work. You get a sense of accomplishment being able to see the projects you have worked on. Burgess cares about family, and that’s important to me. Something that just started out as a job turned into a career.

I started at Burgess Concrete July 1, 2013 honestly not knowing I would enjoy it as much as I do now. When I started this job, I had in mind that it would be temporary but was quick to learn that I have a passion for this. For a job that started as a stepping stone, it has turned into a career teaching me numerous things, not only in the construction industry but in life as well. Hard work. Leadership. Loyalty. Faith. I went to college for two years. One at GRCC and one at Central Michigan University. I thought college was for me because that’s what everyone was doing but was quick to discover it wasn’t. I wasn’t satisfied. I found the hard work the crew and myself accomplish every day to be much more satisfying. Burgess Concrete had me attend 2 concrete construction classes through GRCC since I’ve started. I must say that attending classes that I want to attend make it much more enjoyable. Through it all I’m thankful for the opportunities given to me, the leadership and the people in this company. I’m thankful I work for Burgess Concrete.

I made a major career change in the spring of 1990. Burgess Concrete Construction (BCC) provided me with that career choice and I have never looked back since. What appealed to me all those years ago (and is still true today), is that BCC is a family oriented, hardworking company that promotes from within. BCC is a strong, stable company that withstood the economic downturn of recent years and came out stronger than ever. BCC is a company that you can stake your career in.

Over 10 years ago, I joined Burgess Concrete Construction. Starting as a laborer, I quickly made my way up to Foreman and now a manager in their polishing division. BCC is a large operation but with their family owned & operated background they take the time to appreciate and know all their employees. Which makes working at BCC an easy and rewarding one.
